Mast Climbers: Why Your Initial Thoughts Are Wrong

Mast Climbers: Why Your Initial Thoughts Are Wrong

Mast climbers aren’t new.

Despite providing vertical access to the built environment since the 1990s, that is still the perception. This means that many projects are sticking with traditional forms of vertical access rather than considering alternatives.

More often than not, it boils down to mindset. This mindset is echoed in the all-too-frequently heard phrase, “We’ve used this for so long, why we would change?”

But this mindset is holding back growth and stopping projects from running much more efficiently.

The simple dismissal of mast climbers often comes down to false assumptions.

Statements like, They’re a single platform, but I need more flexible access”, or “I need to be able to work around corners” are far too easy to say and are categorically wrong.

Mast climbers are much more than a single platform. In fact, they provide similar levels of flexibility to scaffolding with additional benefits to the project and the trades using them.

Here’s how mast climbers prove they are much more than a straight-line access platform.

Circular Buildings

Circular buildings often cause headaches for the vertical access trade as there is a perceived notion that they are difficult to work around.

Mast climbers are dismissed for this exact reason. The perception that they are a single, linear platform means that at the specification stage, mast climbers are overlooked before any questions are asked.

But it couldn’t be further from the truth.

Mast climbers are modular and therefore fully adaptable. Varying extensions across the platform enable you to create a curve, perfect for circular buildings.

Access To Recessed Areas

External fire escapes, protruding windows, architectural design...

These are all features which create recesses in the façades of high-rise buildings; often another sticking point for those considering vertical access.

Can a mast climber access these areas or is it easier to erect scaffolding?

More often than not the choice is the latter. As mast climbers are considered linear, the thought is that they can’t be adapted.

That’s because there is little knowledge of mast climbers in the wider built environment.

With simple extensions onto the mast climber platform, recessed areas are immediately accessible making them an obvious choice.

Impact on Residents

Have you ever considered the impact your vertical access has on those within the buildings?

The constant loud noises, lack of a clear view and unpredictable project timeline means over an extended period of time, the livelihood and even mental health of those inside is being affected.

BFT Mastclimbing recently spoke to a resident whose home has been enclosed in scaffolding for almost 2-years, and it’s impacting her own mental health.

Mast climbers combat this. When used, windows aren’t obstructed, whole facades aren’t covered, and the only noise disruption is on the level the mast climber is working on.

Working Around Corners

As long as there are masts on both of the vertical sides you are gaining access to, going around corners isn’t an issue for mast climbers.

Drive units work together, ensuring the platform ascends and descends at a controlled and level rate, and with some simple modules attached, 90o corners don’t need to be a concern.
